What is it about "s"? - English also used to have two lower case forms, ordinary s for the final position, integral signs in most other places.

Yeah the alphabet is pretty easy to learn especially the upper case, the lower case is unique in having two of the letter s or sigma, uppercase Σ, lowercase σ, lowercase in word-final position ς
The Greek alphabet doesn't have the equivalent of our letters B or D which might sound unusual as the Greek letters Beta and Delta are not direct equivalents, they are pronounced differently as in Vita and Thelta

Learning to speak Greek is tough, once you get through the alphabet, the diphthongs, male, female, neuter etc etc then comes then pronunciation.
You may learn 20 new words in a day but say any one of the slightly wrong and then person you’re speaking to won’t have a clue what you’re saying.
An English friend of mine is a mobile hairdresser in Greece and whilst cutting an old lady’s hair thought she’d try a bit of her new found lingo. ‘I’m tired’ she said in Greek, the old girl stood up, turned round and hugged her asking if she was ok. What she’d actually said was ‘I’m divorced’.
A strange language not to be tackled by the faint hearted, I spent 16 years in the place and I’d say my Greek my ‘minimal’ but enough to get by.
